Tall Grass Ventures is seeking a Financial Controller to join our team. As a firm that invests in early-stage technology businesses, our core values of collaboration, communication, diversity, and authenticity are critical to our success. We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious individual who shares these values and wants to be a part of building a firm as a valued member of our growing team.
This is a hybrid position. The location of your work will be within commuting distance in the greater Winnipeg area, with the ability to travel to Calgary for one week every quarter. Working closely with the other members of the Tall Grass team, you will have the following primary area of responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management and Reporting:
· Manage all finance and accounting operations, including billing, accounts receivable/payable, general ledger, and revenue recognition
· Coordinate and direct the preparation of budgets and financial forecasts, as well as report variances
· Oversee the preparation of quarterly and annual financial statements
· Manage fund administration through preparation, tracking, and communication of pertinent investment materials
· Act as point of contact and oversee annual third-party audit
Regulatory Compliance and Internal Controls:
· Ensure compliance with provincial, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
· Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
· Coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting and research technical accounting issues for compliance
Financial Analysis and Strategy:
· Provide comprehensive financial and ESG updates to executive leadership by evaluating, analyzing, and reporting data points
· Guide financial decisions by applying company policies and procedures to the current economic landscape
· Coordination and preparation of fund financial models and scenario forecasting
Operational and Risk Management:
· Manage and comply with insurance recommendations and related purchases
· Coordinate and collaborate with third-party fund administration firm and communication with internal stakeholders
Brand and Awareness
· Represent the firm within the broader Manitoba agriculture, innovation and investment ecosystems, including attending ecosystem events, liaising with investors, and meeting with local startups
Qualifications:
As an emerging fund manager, it’s important to note that we move very fast! As our firm and internal operations evolve, other responsibilities are sure to emerge. We are keen to expand our team with someone who can excel independently and possesses a strong entrepreneurial drive to take on new challenges with curiosity and enthusiasm.
· BComm with 5+ years experience
· CPA or current pursuit in the field
· Strong QuickBooks experience
· ASPE and / or GAAP experience an asset
· Strong written, verbal, analytical skills
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a willingness to collaborate with others.
· Passion/interest for agriculture and food and venture capital
